PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Phlebotomy Technicians collect blood from patients and prepare the samples for testing. Most phlebotomists work in hospitals and clinics, but some collect blood for donation purposes. Oftentimes they need to explain the blood drawing procedure to patients to put them at ease. Other common tasks include: taking blood pressure, pulse, and respiration readings; drawing blood; applying bandages after blood is drawn; sending blood, urine, or fecal samples to the lab for testing; sterilizing equipment; updating patient records. (Source: Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science)

Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technicians are health care employees who perform diagnostic tests that help doctors identify cardiovascular problems in patients. The tests can help discover any irregularities in the heart that may lead to a heart attack or heart disease. They work mostly in hospitals, but can also work in long-term specialty care facilities or private practices. The EKG technician explains the test to patients prior to conducting them. Once the patient is connected to the machine, the technician monitors heart performance and the patient's blood pressure. (Source: Indeed)

Salaries vary widely based on level of experience, the nature of the position, and location. The median annual salary is $84,000 for an EKG Technician. The median annual salary for a Phlebotomy Technician is $47,000.

Employment of phlebotomists and EKG Technicians is projected to grow 10 percent from 2021 to 2031, faster than the average for all occupations.
